Are your home cooling systems summer ready?
With natural gas prices rising due to the expected summer temperature projections being above average, a lot of homeowners are looking for ways to cut down their home cooling costs.
Many of us in Toledo do not have central air and still use wall units. I did not install my central air conditioning until 2008, which was a big relief to the family. We live in an old farmhouse in the country, so there was a lot of modifications I had to do to install that unit. Until then, we used various techniques to keep up cool in the hot summer. With a huge home and multiple stories, it was a task. My Sons and I stuck to spending that summer downstairs eating popcorn and watching movies because it was too hot upstairs. That being said, I was able to alleviate some of the heat by making sure my attic fan was working properly.
Speaking of Attic Fans, my mother-in-laws attic fan broke 2 years in a row. She actually noticed, because the house would heat up like a sauna! Its amazing the difference a fan can make. So if you own a home, and you have an attic fan, make sure that its clean and working properly. Your roof attracts a lot of heat during the summer, and your homes cooling is effected. If your attic fan isn’t working, you can notice a change of temperature inside the house anywhere from a 5-10 degrees difference. In turn, leading you your cooling systems working harder to keep you cool. If you need to install an attic fan, I found a few blog posts and videos that allow you to DIY, and some of them are even solar powered, which helps cut down on costs!
Adding a Roof Ridge Vent to your home can be beneficial to keeping you cool during the summer as well. If you do not have one now, you can weigh the benefits of it and see if this is something your home needs.
What happens with poor ventilation?
- Excessive heat and moisture build-up.
- Roof decks rot from the inside out
- Shingles will fall apart or curl due to the heat build-up.
- Void your shingle warranty
- Home Cooling systems work harder = $$
Benefits of adding Roof Ridge Vents
- Allows the outside air that enters to escape out the top of the roof, preventing damage
- Releases moisture from home
- Draws air out of the attic
- Adds sleek look to your home (sexy roof)
- Effective w/o being used in combination with other home cooling systems
So, lets keep it cool this summer. I’ll see you at the Toledo Summer Festival this year!
